New birch plywood mill in Estonia

Estonian EstPly has started the production of birch plywood at their new Viruvere mill in Jõgeva district in Central Estonia.

The mill has an annual production capacity of 55.000 m3 of plywood, based on locally sourced birch logs.

EstPly is owned by two of the leading players in the Estonian timber sector; LEMEKS and TARMEKO Groups.

As rationale for building a greenfield birch plywood mill in the middle of Estonia, EstPly mentions:

  • The share of birch forests has grown in Estonia since 1960 and is now comprising 26% of the standwise inventory
  • There are plenty of mature birch trees as 42% of birch forests are older than 50 years. There is an even age class distribution of birch stands, and there is a growing stock for each decade to come.
  • In conclusion; In terms of birch log supply, the future looks bright for the Estonian wood processing industries.
